Unwelcome Calls from Unknown Numbers

There is a great trend in Pakistan where little kids, and I do include immature men in that category, like to call people at odd hours and ask them to “make friendship with them.” In Pakistan, make friendship is to date them. First off, it takes a small man to call someone up and harass them, but then most of Pakistan’s male society is frustrated because of the Mullah code.

Now, since in Pakistan, the only thing that mobile companies will do is warn the person that is making these calls, we have created this Wall of Shame. If you are recieving harassing calls or SMSs, please post them on this site so that we can approach the relevant authorities for the permanent blocking of the number. Even if the number doesn’t get blocked, this will create a registry of stupid callers that can be referenced to PTA and the mobile companies, since they don’t believe that their connections could be used in this way.

I’ll start the list with the following Telenor numbers:

0346 - 263 -7787

0346 - 242 - 3506 - This person is a bi-sexual and has no problem asking men or women to join him in “friendship” so if you are looking to have some fun tonight give him a call. But be careful, he sounds all of 15 years old. Or maybe you can call him up and unload some pent up frustration.

If you are receiving harassing calls or SMSs from any of the mobile companies subscribers, feel free to list their cell number, what they said to you and the time of the call. We will push the mobile companies and PTA to take notice and action once and for all to rid our society of this trash.

And for the owners of the mobile numbers, you gave your right to privacy when you made your first harassing call or SMS. So don’t complain or whine that your number is posted on the internet for everyone to see what kind of person you are.

I would add a further dimension to this debate.

Recently got a Call from a Pakistani Bank, the caller wanted to know, if I needed a Credit Card. I politely declined (the caller was a recent graduate, with one month on the job). On asking the caller, how he got my number, was told that, as I was a customer of a Gora Bank, so they got my details from there (his Boss had given him the list).

Now, the issue is, this Bank got the information (i carry a credit card and my personal cell no) through an ex employee of the Foreign Bank, who copied the database & took it with him on leaving the Bank. He is now using the database to get clients for his NEW employers.

My problems with this are as follows:

    a. Bank details are supposed to be CONFIDENTIAL and not to be shared with anyone.

    b. I DONT share my Cell No with everyone, as I don’t want to be bothered with too many calls at wrong times (in a meeting, working on a project or with family). So this call was a shocker.

    c. How can the new employer know, that this guy would not steal THEIR database, when he leaves for the next opportunity.

    d. Where does the stealing end?

I agree with farzana’s comments that there is no way to stop people to buy and use multiple SIMS from same or different companies. Its a nice initiative and people MUST use this forum to highlight the people creating disturbance in the society

Completely agreed. We have seen some motion from the PTA on stopping the issuance of pre-activated SMSes due to the terrorism problem, but we would like to see a law added to the Pakistan Penal Code for those who use mobile phones, and landlines for that matter, to harass people.

Going back to Kamran’s comment, it’s not just the banks that are doing this. I have personally stopped giving my cell number to any business, unless they are clients of ours. When you give your cell number for deliveries from fast food places and stores are bigger targets for cell phone harassment.

If we start being more responsible about WHO we give our numbers to, it is easier to make sure that we don’t get harassing calls. We have landlines so it’s not really necessary to give a cell number, in my humble opinion.
