Police Demand Bribe to Remove an Abandoned Vehicle - What Security?

An Open Letter to The Chief Minister and Home Minister of Sindh;

After watching your numerous representatives come on television and talk about how law and order is your first priority, I would like to bring to your attention a case of police incompetence that I got to take part in last night.

I have family that lives on Khayban-e-Shujaat in Defence Karachi. In front of their home, someone parked a car (AAK 272) and left it, telling the chowkidars around the house that they had permission from the people who live there. The car has been there since 8 pm last night.

Now here is where the story gets fun. The police were called to come and remove the car, since the home owners have not given anyone permission to park there. Our Karachi Police showed up and promptly reported that the vehicle was clean, not involved in any murders nor stolen and if we wanted the car removed, we have to pay for the lifter to come and remove it.

While waiting for the police to arrive, friends at the Naval Housing Society called to let us know that there had been a major robbery in the area and the robbers were waiting inside the home for the people to come back.

At the same time, we called the Chief Minister’s House complaint line and made the same complaint, only to get no action.

This morning, the car still stands there. I have spoken to the police and Chief Minister’s house, neither willing to take any action. The last update that I got was that the police were on the scene now but had again repeated their demand for payment to remove the car.

So it is clear to us now. If we are willing to give the police “chai paani,” then our citizens will be kept secure; otherwise, we have no right to security.

Democracy at its finest.

Unwelcome Calls from Unknown Numbers

There is a great trend in Pakistan where little kids, and I do include immature men in that category, like to call people at odd hours and ask them to “make friendship with them.” In Pakistan, make friendship is to date them. First off, it takes a small man to call someone up and harass them, but then most of Pakistan’s male society is frustrated because of the Mullah code.

Now, since in Pakistan, the only thing that mobile companies will do is warn the person that is making these calls, we have created this Wall of Shame. If you are recieving harassing calls or SMSs, please post them on this site so that we can approach the relevant authorities for the permanent blocking of the number. Even if the number doesn’t get blocked, this will create a registry of stupid callers that can be referenced to PTA and the mobile companies, since they don’t believe that their connections could be used in this way.

I’ll start the list with the following Telenor numbers:

0346 - 263 -7787

0346 - 242 - 3506 - This person is a bi-sexual and has no problem asking men or women to join him in “friendship” so if you are looking to have some fun tonight give him a call. But be careful, he sounds all of 15 years old. Or maybe you can call him up and unload some pent up frustration.

If you are receiving harassing calls or SMSs from any of the mobile companies subscribers, feel free to list their cell number, what they said to you and the time of the call. We will push the mobile companies and PTA to take notice and action once and for all to rid our society of this trash.

And for the owners of the mobile numbers, you gave your right to privacy when you made your first harassing call or SMS. So don’t complain or whine that your number is posted on the internet for everyone to see what kind of person you are.
